To Compliment or Not to Compliment?
To piggy back off of Friday’s blog Take Your Compliment Like a Man, I’d like to continue with a few thoughts. A reader brought up an interesting point of what if the compliment is not true? Like someone obviously making fun of me or just using it as manipulation. You receive those fake compliments the same way. A simple thank you will do. But don’t give flattery (fake compliments) any weight in your life. Take it as an opportunity to discern your relationship to the giver.
A compliment is not flattery. Flattery as defined by Miriam-Webster is insincere or excessive praise. A compliment is 100% for the receiver’s benefit and flattery is 100% for the giver’s benefit. Flattery is used to manipulate to achieve a result. A compliment results in respect for that person.
Let that be a lesson to you complimenters. Make sure it is always true. Don’t tell someone something you do not believe or for your gain. If you can’t find something true then do not compliment. Most married men understand this, our wives can detect flattery a mile away; I know Mrs. Coach H can!
Compliment Challenge
Give 5 compliments this week. Just like this guy (link)
Rules:
The compliment has to be authentic; No flattery (nothing to gain)
At least 3 given to persons outside of your family
Bonus Challenge: Give one to a stranger.
Interesting Notes:
Proverbs 26:28 (NIV) speaks on Flattery.
A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.
Romans 15:2 (NIV) speaks on how to compliment.
Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
Have a great week!
